Can you remove tree of heaven in Ohio in November?

Sources (1)

Ohio source only. Checked October 27, 2026. Not legal advice; follow the herbicide label.

Partly.Pulling or digging seedlings in moist ground still works. OSU Extension’s leaf-spray window (full leaf-out to fall color) is over for this year, and cutting a big tree without treatment makes it sprout.

When Ohio’s guidance says to do it

If cutting small plants, start in early summer and repeat. Leaf sprays go on after full leaf-out and before fall color. Check for sprouts and seedlings for at least two years; seeds can live in the soil more than five years.

How to remove tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima)

Pull or dig seedlings when the ground is moist, getting the whole root. Don't just cut or girdle a bigger tree: OSU Extension says that sets off a flush of sprouts from the stump and roots. Trees up to about 8 in. across are best killed with a labeled basal-bark herbicide; bigger trees usually need follow-up treatment of sprouts. Follow the label.
