What planting zone am I in? Enter your ZIP
Your USDA plant hardiness zone, from the official 2023 USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map (the current map). It tells you how cold your coldest winter night usually gets, so you know which perennials, shrubs and trees can survive the winter.
How hardiness zones work
USDA builds the map from one number per place: the average of the coldest night of each winter from 1991 to 2020. Each zone is a 10°F band; the a half is the colder 5°F and b is the warmer 5°F. A plant tag that says “hardy to zone 6” means it usually survives winters down to zone 6’s coldest nights (−10 to 0°F). If your zone number is the same or higher, the plant should make it through your winters. The zone says nothing about summer heat, rain or soil.
Planting zone FAQ
What planting zone am I in?
Enter your 5-digit ZIP code above. The zone comes from the official 2023 USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map ZIP-code table published by the PRISM Climate Group at Oregon State University, which made the map with USDA's Agricultural Research Service.
What is a USDA plant hardiness zone?
A zone is based on the average annual extreme minimum winter temperature at a place: the coldest night of the year, averaged over 1991–2020. Full zones are 10°F bands and the a and b half zones are 5°F bands.
Is there a 2026 USDA hardiness zone map?
No newer map has replaced it: the current official USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map is the 2023 edition, released in November 2023 and based on 1991–2020 weather data. This page uses that 2023 map.
What do the a and b in a zone mean?
Each 10°F zone is split into two 5°F halves. The a half is the colder one and the b half is 5°F warmer. For example, zone 7a is 0 to 5°F and zone 7b is 5 to 10°F.
How many hardiness zones are there?
The 2023 USDA map has 13 zones (26 half zones), from 1a (−60 to −55°F) to 13b (65 to 70°F).
