Is bamboo illegal in Pennsylvania?
What the law says
The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture's Controlled Plant & Noxious Weed lists do not include bamboo, so state law does not ban selling or planting it.
Local rules are where bamboo is regulated. Examples: Thornbury Township (Chester County) Chapter 130 bans planting running bamboo unless it is in a container or a 40-mil barrier at least 30 inches deep, and keeps all bamboo at least 20 feet from property lines and rights-of-way. West Norriton Township (Montgomery County) adopted Ordinance 2025-776, which bans new planting of running bamboo and requires barriers. Check your township code.

Bamboo is usually planted for privacy. Native evergreens like wax myrtle and yaupon holly are rated fast-growing by NC State Extension; see fast-growing privacy trees & hedges (native). Giant cane (Arundinaria gigantea) is a native bamboo-like grass in parts of the eastern US.
