Fall seeding windows by state
| State | Extension window (wording condensed) | Mid-Oct.? | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Virginia | September through mid-October is optimal across most of the state. Peninsula calendar: overseeding after Oct. 15 is not recommended | Mostly past | Virginia Cooperative Extension, VCE Lawn Maintenance Calendar |
| Maryland | Mid-August to mid-October. “October 15th is the cut-off date for fall seeding.” Next window: late February through early April | Past | University of Maryland Extension, University of Maryland Extension |
| Delaware | Best is “late August to mid-September” | Past | University of Delaware Cooperative Extension |
| North Carolina | Mid-August to early October, depending on location; Piedmont target mid-September to early October, mountains 1–2 weeks earlier. Spring fallback for the Piedmont: mid-February to early March | Past | NC State Extension Gardener Handbook, Ch. 9, NC State TurfFiles |
| South Carolina | Tall fescue grows in the mountains and upper Piedmont (east to about Columbia) and “will not grow along the coast” | Not on the coast | Clemson HGIC 1210 |
| Georgia | September and October are ideal. If you’d be seeding after mid-November, wait until mid-February. Best adapted to the Piedmont; southern limit about Griffin | Still open (north GA) | UGA Extension AP 105 |
| Tennessee | Late August to mid-October is ideal for cool-season grasses | Closing now | UT Extension W160-F |
| West Virginia | Optimal time is early to mid-September | Past | WVU Extension |
Why late seeding fails
UMD explains that seed takes about two weeks to germinate and killing frosts are possible in November. Optimum soil temperature for germination is 50–70°F, and fall-sown seed that hasn't come up dies over the winter (Kentucky bluegrass is the exception). Maryland Extension also says dormant seeding of tall fescue usually doesn't work (UMD calendar, UMD seeding). Spring seeding is the backup, but NC State warns spring seedlings often don't root deeply enough before summer heat (NC State).

- Seeding rate: VCE lists 6–8 lb of tall fescue per 1,000 sq ft. NC State uses 6 lb, and UGA 5–6 lb. NC State warns more seed isn't better (VCE, NC State, UGA).
- Seed-to-soil contact: Core aerate or slit seed before overseeding, and sow half the seed in each direction (UMD).
- Water: Keep the top 1–2 inches moist, not wet. That's usually daily light watering for about three weeks (UGA).
- Soil test first: Every one of these Extension services recommends it before a renovation.
